Yes! Miami voters approve David Beckham’s Soccer Stadium and Convention Center Hotel

Miami voters went to the ballots and voted “yes” to continue with the negotiations to build a soccer stadium on public land. Miami Freedom Park will host the Major League Soccer (MLS), a soccer team led by well-known player David Beckham.

He was in South Florida on Thursday to campaign for what is expected to be an authentic “technological” complex. The Arquitectonica-designed stadium has 25,000-square-foot with a capacity for 28 thousand spectators, besides more than 1 million square feet of a retail component and office space, plus 750 hotel rooms.

Beckham did not hide his happiness and thanked those present: “What can I say more? Thank you.”

Additionally included in the project are several soccer pitches open to the public, a water park for children, a baseball complex, and other entertainment venues. Also, it will allow the development of a 23-acre public park that will depend on the administration of the City of Miami.

Moving forward with the project, Beckham and his partners Jorge and Jose Mas will have to negotiate with the city a 99-year lease. After that, the project still requires approval from city commissioners to be fully approved, and those votes are far from guaranteed.

Convention Center Hotel

Another project also approved by voters was the authorization to lease city land to build an 800-room hotel next to Convention Center in Miami Beach; the project had ground lease already approved by the City Commission.

Now, developers need approval from the city’s Design Review Board. They will evaluate the hotel design, and check if it meets all city requirements including applying for building permits.

Before presenting the project to a design review, the developers are looking into management companies to oversee the hotel operations. Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott are being considered.
