Miami ranks in the top 50 for most livable cities in the world for 2019

Miami is ranked at the top 50 of livable cities in 2019, according to a survey called Global Liveability Index, produced by The Economist. The city ranked at 42 out of 140 cities in the study. It was tied with Chicago, beating Boston, San Francisco, and Minneapolis but lingering behind Honolulu, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Washington DC. Honolulu was at the top of all United States cities, at number 22.

None city in the country made the cut to the global top 10. The highest-ranked North American city was Calgary, Canada, in fifth.  

Understand the Process 

The research and analysis division of The Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit, examined which cities presented the best and worst living conditions.

They ranked every city in the equal 30-plus qualitative and quantitative factors, including healthcare, culture, education, stability (i.e., personal safety), environment, and infrastructure. Then, they rated each city as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable, or intolerable. All of the scores were gathered and weighted, resulting in a ranking between one and 100, with one intolerable and 100 ideal.

Miami increased its position, last year the city was on position number 44, said the EIU’s Global Forecasting Director Agathe Demarais in a company press release.

Now, globally, Vienna and Austria took the front, followed by Melbourne and Sydney in Australia. The bottom 10 included Caracas in Venezuela, at 131, “as the government’s fight for legitimacy has impeded its ability to provide basic services for its citizens,” EIU remarked. Damascus, Syria ranked last.
