A new redevelopment project will take place in downtown Miami

Whoever walks through the streets of Miami is no longer strange when a house or building comes down to give space to a new development. Well, now it’s time to say goodbye to the Courtyard by Marriot in Downtown Miami and welcome the 2nd & 2nd project.

Miami Convention Hotel Corp., a New York-based company, filled the plan with the City of Miami and got an approval recommendation from the city’s Urban Development Review Board last week for the redevelopment.

If it moves forward, an 82-story skyscraper will replace the current 14-story Marriott hotel. The 898-foot mixed-use tower will include a hotel component with a retail area, rental apartments, and a two-story bar.

The new project will deliver 266 hotel rooms, 637 residences, 9,245 square feet of commercial-retail and 8,563 square feet of open space. The building will have 553 parking spaces.

According to Iris Escarra, the attorney representing the developer, the plan is to build a sleek, elegant tower. “It will be a great asset to Miami’s skyline,” she said to the review board, enhancing that the site has four remarkable facades.

She then added: “The project is centrally located at an intersection which has a variety of retail, civic, and restaurant uses located on all sides of the Project. With the abutting Metromover Station, the entirety of downtown and Brickell is accessible from the property.”

With the addition of the retail area on the property, Escarra believes the redevelopment will increase the number of pedestrians. “This will enhance the pedestrian realm and encourage walkability along a stretch of downtown with no retail frontages,” she concludes.
