Bus shelters created by Italian Pininfarina is coming to Miami Beach

Always planning to stay ahead of the curve, the city of Miami Beach has hired the Italian Pininfarina, company best known for designing Ferraris, to design approximately 300 bus shelters. Construction is set to begin in 2019.

“Miami Beach leads the way in design and style,” Commissioner Ricky Arriola said in a press release. “As a city, we strive to build beautiful, affordable and practical Public Works projects for our residents and visitors to both use and admire.”

Pininfarina, and Acai Associates, the Fort Lauderdale based architecture firm, will deliver a shelter with solar panels that will generate power at night, colored roof panels that will produce kaleidoscopic light patterns on sunny days and display arrival time of buses.

“The look is very natural — a mix of natural and technologic,” says Paolo Trevisan, design chief at Pininfarina of America. “[The support columns] look like the trunk of a palm, but at the same time, it’s very controlled. We’re taking care of every little detail, what we have designed is not just a product but an entire system.”

The project will cost $504,251, and the city believes that advertising revenue will eventually cover that figure.

Pininfarina’s mark can be found all over South Florida, including at the 1100 Millecento, a condo building in Brickell and Midtown’s Curated, which has several Ferraris designed by the company in its vintage offerings.
