Miami Commissioners gives the green light to another starchitect mega project

Bjarke Ingels Group has obtained approval from Miami commissioners to build a project in the industrial heart of Allapattah. The Miami Produce Center project sits on stilts and will feature offices, educational facilities, residential units, a hotel, and parking. The eight-building complex will cover more than 8 acres in the northwestern region of downtown Miami.

Located on 12th Avenue and 21st Street, the site was purchased for $ 16 million in 2016. Robert Wennett, the entrepreneur behind the project, also bought warehouses and buildings throughout the Miami industrial area.

The BIG proposal presents an external orthogonal geometry with variations in height and walls and balconies that escape the formal rigidity that defines the slabs. In total, the project will have more than 100 thousand square meters and will have retail and a school on the ground floor. With 19 stories, the plan would include 1,200 residential units and more than 1,000 parking spaces.

If the projects win final approval, which is easy to assume it will, the neighboorhood would finally receive substantial attention; some even compare as the next Wynwood. A few real estate entrepreneurs have moved into the area, buying up commercial and residential properties and driving up prices.
